What is RoHS?

In order to contribute to the protection of human health and the environment, especially for the recovery and disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment, the European Union (E.U) adopted and published the RoHS Directive (Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment) (2002/95/EC).

Requirements of RoHS Compliance

The RoHS Directive regulates the utilization of six substances:

• Lead (Pb)
• Mercury (Hg)
• Cadmium (Cd)
• Hexavalent Chromium (Cr VI)
• Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB)
• Polybrominated DiphenylEthers (PBDE)

The categories of electrical equipment covered under the RoHS directive include the following:

• Large household appliances
• Small household appliances
• IT and telecommunications equipment
• Consumer equipment
• Lighting equipment
• Electrical and electronic tools (with the exception of large-scale stationary industrial tools)
• Toys, leisure and sports equipment
• Automatic dispensers

Maximum Concentration Values (MCVs):

• Pb, Hg, Cr(VI), PBB/PBDE : 1000 ppm
• Cd: 100 ppm
